Every year, Age Cymru is privileged to work with incredible volunteers and participants through a range of programmes from healthy ageing work to our arts festival. We want to celebrate the outstanding contributions that many people make to the lives of older people through Age Cymru.

The Age Cymru Awards will allow us to build on already established relationships and we also hope they’ll help us to gain the attention of influential organisations and individuals throughout Wales when we publish the inspirational stories of our winners.

We believe that it’s fitting to create the Age Cymru Awards because so many people deserve increased recognition for the work they have done with us. Of course ultimately, they are all winners but on this occasion we’ll recognise five individuals who have made a special contribution.

Why this year?

The Awards have been established this year, 2012, which is the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity Between Generations. This theme fits with many Age Cymru programmes and activities.

The Awards

The five awards are based on Age Cymru programmes, Gwanwyn, My Home Life Cymru, Active Ageing, Campaigner of the year and Local Delivery.

The Age Cymru Awards will be presented to the winners at a glittering gala dinner at the Cardiff Hilton, on Friday 8th February 2013.

• nominations are now open
• closing date is Monday 3rd December 2012
• judging will be complete by 15th January 2013
• winners will be notified by 22nd January 2013.

You are invited to a celebration event in Fairwater Leisure Centre at 1.30pm on Monday October 1st to enjoy the creative results of a recent intergenerational project.

In July, People Around Here worked with Peter Lea Primary School and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr to connect local older people with school pupils in a week of storytelling, songwriting, drama and art.

This project was funded by Cardiff West Neighbourhood Management and we hope it will act as a springboard to get intergenerational projects up and running in every school in Cardiff West.

Please join us to celebrate age on the ‘International Day of Older People’ and find out more about what you can do to engage with older people in your area.

There will be live music performances, premiere showings of two short films, and art presentations – all of which will come from the young people and older volunteers together.

Please see attached poster and a letter of invitation from Peter Lea Primary School on behalf of everyone involved.

If you are an organisation working with older people in Cardiff, and you would like to have a stall at the event, please contact Debbie at Fairwater Leisure Centre ASAP. (DTurner@cardiff.gov.uk)

Each and every one of us has the ability to shape Wales.

One person taking a stance can make a big difference; change can happen when people from a town or village join forces to make improvements to their community; demonstrations and protests give democracy a voice.

The National Assembly for Wales is therefore inviting you to send in your pictures of democracy in action in Wales.

You don’t need to be a photographer or even have a camera – we’re as keen to see blurry action pics taken with your smart-phone as we are to look at images from a digital camera.

As long as they illustrate the power we have as Welsh citizens to change our country, send them in to us. As well as giving you the opportunity to win some great prizes, your photographs will add to an historical, visual record of Wales during this unique period in the history of Welsh devolution.

The deadline for submissions is 31 August 2012

For more information on how to enter this unique competition, visit www.DemocracyInActionInWales.org

Soap Opera!

Who’d believe it?  In one street, small  town or square at least one of the inhabitants will have changed sex, come out, been burgled, put up for adoption, married many times, lost children, friends, been bulimic, become suicidal – and happy!  Unbelievable? No!

On any street in any town or village, there are people silently fighting battles. And “The Rest of Us” just don’t notice.  They’re hidden in plain sight.

This gripping Theatre presentation will use people’s real stories to let the audience into their lives and give a voice to people who can’t speak for themselves, who are “Hidden in Plain Sight”:  Megan Evans, who has to go into a Care Home as her memories fade; Paul, who knew when he was four that he was a “little girl, not a little boy”  In his twenties he starts on the long road to put things right; Mair who comes home to find her front door smashed in and her grandmother’s wedding ring missing. The thief’s caught and there’s a chance for her to confront him.

Each performance will be followed by workshops with organisations such as Victim Support, Age Cymru and the Police

The events take place on 5th and 6th October at Theatr Soar in Merthyr Tydfil

Pwy fydde’n ei gredu? Mewn un  stryd, tref fach neu sgwar, mae o leia un o’r trigolion wedi newid rhyw, dod allan, cael lladrad, eu mabwysiadu. Wedi priodi sawl gwaith, colli plant, cyfeillion, dioddef o bwlimia, wedi teimo fel lladd eu hunain – neu’n hapus! Anghredadwy? Na!

Ar unrhyw stryd mewn unrhyw dref neu bentref, mae pobl yn brwydro helbulon yn ddistaw bach. Heb i’r “Gweddill Ohonnom” sylwi arnynt. Maent wedi eu cuddio yng ngolau dydd.

Bydd y cyflwyniad Theatr cyffrous hwn yn defnyddio straeon pobl go iawn i adael y gynulleidfa mewn i’w bywydau a rhoi llais i’r rhai sy’n gudd “Yng Ngolau Dydd”: Megan Evans, sy gorfod mynd i Gartre Gofal wrth i’w hatgofion ddiflannu; Paul a sylweddolodd pan oedd o’n bedair oed ei fod “Yn eneth fach, nid bachgen bach”.
