Lui and Artemis workshop and performance, Dance House, Cardiff
- Saturday 20th May 2017
- Sunday 21st May 2017
- The Dance House, Wales Millennium Centre, Pierhead Street, Cardiff, CF10 4PH
Type of Event: Dance Workshop
(English)
The eMOTIONal Body is a series of workshops and performances, hosted by NDCWales and themed around performances of Lui & Artemis by Prototype Status from Switzerland.
Their piece, Lui & Artemis, is interpreted by Artemis Sacantanis and Peter Jolesch, both over 65 and former soloists from the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz and Bayerisches Staatsballet in Munich.
The performance explores the paradoxical journey of an older couple, who feel younger at heart in their now worn-out bodies than they could have ever been during their first embrace. Their minds are turned towards the past and the future at the same time, whilst their bodies are stuck in the present moment.
Artemis and Peter will lead the workshops which focus on simple actions connected to our own experiences. They will also explore exercises and improvisation games which have been used as tools to find the choreographic material of the duet.
'Having seen several of Jasmine Morand’s creations I have been particularly struck by Lui & Artemis. Both performers are mature artists who have enjoyed successful careers as professional dancers; this duet oozes honesty, beauty and sensitivity. I was excited to invite the company in conjunction with our Gwanwyn festival celebrations and to enable them to also share their process with others through workshops in collaboration with Age Cymru.' Caroline Finn – Artistic Director NDCWales.
Join us for a 90 minute workshop, followed by refreshments, and stay on to see Lui & Artemis, all for just £12.50.
Times vary.
Saturday 20 May, workshop 4 - 5.30pm / performance 7.30pm

Help create ‘River of Lights 2016’, a celebration of Pembrokeshire’s County Town and its links with the rural communities that it serves.
Last year, over 600 people gathered on the riverside in Haverfordwest, their lit lanterns bobbing, in the shadows of the castle above, as an 11ft skeleton puppet emerged and made its way across the bridge to meet the crowds.
Inspired by the folk tale of The Fisherman and the Skeleton, the procession saw shoals of glowing fish and hand-held pyramid lanterns streaming along the riverside, following the magnificent Skeleton to a spectacular “fire sculpture”, which went off with a real “bang!”
Find out more here http://www.thelabhaverfordwest.org/2016/06/16/river-of-lights/
This year the procession, will be based on the medieval story of the ‘danse macabre’ where Death brings his subjects back to life for one night only to have a glorious party! Who or what would your community like to bring back to life to come and join the dance?
River of Lights is a partnership between Confluence, Span Arts’ Cheerful Project and artist Toby Downing. They will provide training, all the materials and information needed to enable your organisation to safely run a lantern-making workshop for your group or community.
Training for workshop leaders will take place in Haverfordwest over two days on Sunday 18 September 11am-5pm, and Monday 19 September 3pm-9pm. Ideally it would be good to have two people from each group attending, although you only need to attend on one of these days.
Once trained, you will have help to plan and run a workshop in your community. A second weekend workshop will take place on 15 and 16 October in Haverfordwest, when a small group from each organisation will be able to work with Toby and the team to design and make a larger lantern to be carried by your group.
To book your place(s) on the training please or for more information contact: Guy Norman on 07480 902200 email guy@spacetocreate.org.uk or Rowan Matthiessen from Span Arts on 01834 869323 email rowan@span-arts.org.uk
