  • The Hearth Gallery - Oriel Yr Aelwyd

Type of Event: Art Exhibition

(English) The next Hearth Gallery exhibition will be Dementia Darnings by multi-media artist Jenni Dutton. In this body of work, Jenni responds to her mother’s dementia diagnosis by using stitching to re-create portraits of her mum from old photo albums. The exhibition has toured extensively in the UK and travelled to Europe, and China. This will be the first time it’s shown in Wales and the Hearth Gallery are proud to host it.

Meet the Artist Sessions: 5, 6, 18 May, 6 & & June, 12pm at the Hearth Gallery.

Jenni will also be joined by her daughter, Briony Goffin, who will deliver creative writing workshops - Writing as Tribute. Inspired by the Dementia Darnings exhibition, this warm and welcoming creative writing workshop will explore the power of Writing as Tribute. With support and guidance from writer and tutor, Briony Goffin, participants will be given opportunity to write a tribute to someone special in their lives in the form of a simple list poem. No previous writing experience required, and all writing materials provided.

This workshop also takes its inspiration from Briony Goffin’s TED talk, Writing as an Act of Tribute, in which Briony uses the form of the list poem to honour her grandmother, Gladys Dutton, the subject of the artwork in the Dementia Darnings exhibition. This project has created opportunity for mother and daughter’s work to overlap, and to bring three generations of women back together again.

Alex Williams: Then and Now, Wales Remembered

  • Tuesday 1st March 2022
  • Sunday 19th June 2022
  • Y Gaer

Type of Event: Art Exhibition

Drawing principally on his lifetime experiences, Alex Williams stands out as an artist whose paintings exude a vibrancy and energy.  His return to Wales in the 1970s, following some time in Los Angeles, was the catalyst that sparked a period of creativity and his paintings flourished as never before.

In focusing on rural landscapes, animals and farmyards, in all their down-to-earth, grubby, muddy working detail, his paintings convey, most of all, not just what such places look like. They also have about them a sense of the smells, the tangible elemental qualities and the sheer atmosphere of a typical working farm. The rusty corrugated iron roofs and the weathered wooden clapboards of the walls of the barns and outbuildings are depicted in such a way that the viewer can imagine how they would feel if they passed a hand across them.

Voices from the Edge: Murmurations - cARTrefu at Craft in the Bay Cardiff

  • Saturday 13th May 2017
  • Wednesday 19th July 2017
  • Craft in the Bay, Cardiff

Type of Event: Art Exhibition

(English)
Michal Iwanowski

This exhibition encompasses the works of five visual artists who have spent two years working with residents of care homes across Wales as part of Age Cymru's cARTrefu programme.

Each artist created a nurturing environment where residents felt relaxed and encouraged to share fond memories and forgotten stories.

Emma Prentice

Through responding to this unique interaction, the artists were able to connect with the older people, some of whom live with dementia. As a direct result of this connection the artists were inspired to develop their practice and create work which expressed the sensitivity and fragility of these shared experiences, capturing and amplifying the past glories of the people they met.

Claire Cawte

The spectrum of works in the exhibition is very broad, yet there is a common thread - to showcase the experiences of the older people - creating a wider audience and challenging society's assumption of older age.

River of Lights - Pembrokeshire Lantern Procession

  • Saturday 29th October 2016
  • The Lab Haverfordwest

Type of Event: Multi Art Performance

(English) river-of-lights-2-low-res-for-email

Help create ‘River of Lights 2016’, a celebration of Pembrokeshire’s County Town and its links with the rural communities that it serves.

Last year, over 600 people gathered on the riverside in Haverfordwest, their lit lanterns bobbing, in the shadows of the castle above, as an 11ft skeleton puppet emerged and made its way across the bridge to meet the crowds.

Inspired by the folk tale of The Fisherman and the Skeleton, the procession saw shoals of glowing fish and hand-held pyramid lanterns streaming along the riverside, following the magnificent Skeleton to a spectacular “fire sculpture”, which went off with a real “bang!”

This year the procession, will be based on the medieval story of the ‘danse macabre’ where Death brings his subjects back to life for one night only to have a glorious party! Who or what would your community like to bring back to life to come and join the dance?

River of Lights is a partnership between Confluence, Span Arts’ Cheerful Project and artist Toby Downing. They will provide training, all the materials and information needed to enable your organisation to safely run a lantern-making workshop for your group or community.

Training for workshop leaders will take place in Haverfordwest over two days on Sunday 18 September 11am-5pm, and Monday 19 September 3pm-9pm. Ideally it would be good to have two people from each group attending, although you only need to attend on one of these days.

Once trained, you will have help to plan and run a workshop in your community. A second weekend workshop will take place on 15 and 16 October in Haverfordwest, when a small group from each organisation will be able to work with Toby and the team to design and make a larger lantern to be carried by your group.

To book your place(s) on the training please or for more information contact: Guy Norman on 07480 902200 email guy@spacetocreate.org.uk or Rowan Matthiessen from Span Arts on 01834 869323 email rowan@span-arts.org.uk

Between the Lines is an exhibition of portraits celebrating the strength of community life in Wales and its links within the U.K. and beyond. From local builders, teachers, first responders, park rangers, politicians, grandmothers to ocean rowers and Tibetan Buddhist monks, the project aims to show how strong the Welsh community is, how it links with a global community, and to shine a light on who these people are and what they value.

Dilys Colbourne

Subjects include Dr Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury), Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones (First minister for Wales), Nev Wilshire (C.E.O. The Call Center), Darcus Howe (civil and BME rights campaigner), Molly Conway (campaigner), the late Stan Stennett M.B.E. (entertainer), Dilys Colburne M.B.E.(campaigner), Professor Baroness Finley of Llandaff (founder of Holm Towers cancer hospice), Steve Brace (Olympic athlete) and Professor, Deirdre Beddoe (Historian) together with a whole host of other fascinating people.

Artist Glyn Pooley says, 'Through my art I try to uncover the truth that through determination, enthusiasm and time it is possible to achieve the goal of happiness. This understanding is gained when it is realised that everyone and everything is interconnected. By moving the emphasis from oneself, to helping others, with an honest motivation, it is possible to obtain a greater understanding of life’s purpose. When art reveals this understanding, it too, through its contemplation can offer insights into gaining greater happiness.'

“The idea for ‘No Regrets’ came from the notion that people who get tattoos are always told that they will regret them when they’re older.

“As Gwanwyn is the Wales-wide, national arts festival for older people, I thought it would be interesting to ask older people if they really do regret their tattoo.

“We are excited to be exhibiting the work for the first time outside Wales at the Courtyard Centre for the Arts and hope that this exhibition will challenge preconceptions on what it’s like to be an older person.”

The exhibition will run until November 7. To be among the first to see the show, please join us at the private view on Thursday 15th September, 6-8.

Portraits at TAPE Community Arts

Type of Event: Art Workshop

(English) TAPE Community Arts Centre is offering two afternoon workshops on 9th and 16th May, as part of their Poke the Muse group sessions.

In these workshops we will work together to build up portraits of each other through words and images. The idea is that people seldom look at themselves in a kindly light, so we are inviting them to work with a partner to ‘tease’ each other’s stories out and bring out the best in each other. Work can take any form they wish, prose, poetry, drawing, painting or a mixture of any!

Participants will be invited to submit artwork or writing developed during and after the event, for inclusion in a collection of outcomes and a month long exhibition which will open during the Gwanwyn Festival.

Aiming to offer a creative ‘oasis’, whatever your experience or skill, these sessions offer the opportunity to work in a relaxed setting with materials on hand to explore portraiture in writing or art.

There will be plenty of inspiration and guidance, if required. On hand too, will be pencils, pens, paper, paints, rollers, stamps and other materials to use as you wish.

We are proud to support the Stroke Association campaign, Make May Purple during this year's Gwanwyn.

Paint it Purple for Stroke is an art exhibition for stoke survivors to demonstrate how important creative rehabilitation is in their stroke recovery. Following the resounding success of Brush Strokes last year, this year's paintings or photographs will have a purple theme or element within them.

Paint it Purple truly shows that there is life after stroke and that creative work helps with dexterity, hand movement and well-being after stroke.

Please join us at the exhibition opening at 6pm on 4th May. Exhibition opening times will coincide with venue opening hours.

Rubicon is showcasing a project funded by Gwanwyn last May. Three separate workshops brought together Rubicon’s Cardiff based Llanrumney 60+ dance group and Newport based Nuwave group in three separate venues across the two Cities. The dancers by worked with a new guest teacher and were introduced to a brand new style which incorporated a fusion of Latin Styles.  The ladies involved benefited from dance sessions which were beneficial to their physical, mental and social well-being.  They forged new connections and friendships whilst challenging themselves with a new style of dance.

Professional photographer Sian Trenberth documented the workshops in order to provide images of positive role models for older people enjoying physical and creative dance.  Her images of the Llanrumney Ladies and Nuwave groups in John Lewis represent Rubicon and Gwanwyn in celebrating creativity and dance activities for older people.
