Title: Tonic Gwanwyn Launch 2011 featuring Iwan Llywelyn-Jones
Date: Thursday May 19th 2011
Location: Galeri Caernarfon
Cost: £4.00 / £2.00
We will be celebrating the creativity of older people in North West Wales in the fifth year of Gwanwyn festival in the company of accomplished pianist from Anglesey, Iwan Llewelyn Jones.
Described in the Daily Telegraph as ‘seemingly conjuring a whole orchestra from his instrument’, Iwan Llewelyn-Jones is now established as one of Britain’s most imaginative and successful pianists. He will take to the stage today to perform some firm favourites from the Welsh song repertoire in the form of arrangements for piano, composed by him for his new album Songs Without Words. They include Meirion Williams’ Pan Ddaw’r Nos (When Night Falls); Mai (May) Dilys Elwyn Edwards’ Mae Hiraeth yn y Môr (There is longing in the sea) and two personal favourites of Iwan’s from recent years Llanrwst by Gareth Glyn and Dy Garu Di o Bell (I Loved You From Afar) by Robat Arwyn.
“You are never too old to be creative”, were the words of historian and notable performer of folk music in Welsh Meredydd Evans on the stage of last year’s Gwanwyn 2010 launch here in Galeri
In this special Tonic today we will share with you the creative product by older people, inspired by him.
Councillor John Wyn Williams, Gwynedd Council’s Older People Champion will launch the festival officially in North West Wales on our behalf.
A cup of tea to follow.
