Alex Williams: Then and Now, Wales Remembered

Type of Event: Art Exhibition

(Cymraeg) Drawing principally on his lifetime experiences, Alex Williams stands out as an artist whose paintings exude a vibrancy and energy.  His return to Wales in the 1970s, following some time in Los Angeles, was the catalyst that sparked a period of creativity and his paintings flourished as never before.

In focusing on rural landscapes, animals and farmyards, in all their down-to-earth, grubby, muddy working detail, his paintings convey, most of all, not just what such places look like. They also have about them a sense of the smells, the tangible elemental qualities and the sheer atmosphere of a typical working farm. The rusty corrugated iron roofs and the weathered wooden clapboards of the walls of the barns and outbuildings are depicted in such a way that the viewer can imagine how they would feel if they passed a hand across them.
