The Hearth Gallery / Oriel Yr Aelwyd - The Dementia Darnings Online Creative Writing Workshop
- Thursday 26th May 2022
- Zoom
Type of Event: Writing Workshop
Zoom workshop delivered by Briony Goffin as part of the Dementia Darnings project.
As part of the Dementia Darnings project, Briony Goffin (Jenni Dutton's daughter) will be delivering creative writing workshops as a response to the artwork of her grandmother.
If you haven't been able to view the exhibition at the Hearth Gallery, please familiarise yourself with the artwork by viewing the virtual exhibition: https://artspaces.kunstmatrix.com/node/9819652
About the Workshops:
Writing as Tribute - Inspired by the Dementia Darnings exhibition, this warm and welcoming creative writing workshop will explore the power of Writing as Tribute. With support and guidance from writer and tutor, Briony Goffin, participants will be given opportunity to write a tribute to someone special in their lives in the form of a simple list poem. No previous writing experience required, and all writing materials provided.
This workshop also takes its inspiration from Briony Goffin’s TED talk, Writing as an Act of Tribute, in which Briony uses the form of the list poem to honour her grandmother, Gladys Dutton. Briony Goffin is daughter of artist, Jenni Dutton, and Gladys Dutton is also the subject of the Dementia Darnings. This project has created opportunity for mother and daughter’s work to overlap, and to bring three generations of women back together again.
About the Facilitator:
Briony Goffin is a writer, tutor and mentor. She teaches creative writing at Cardiff University and is a specialist in facilitating Creative Writing experiences in community and healthcare settings. Briony has worked extensively in the NHS, working with patients, staff, and relatives, using creative writing as a medium to document and reflect upon the world of the hospital. She has been awarded inspirational tutor of the year by NIACE and has shared her work on Writing as Tribute with a global audience for TEDxCardiff.

This conversation aims to inform and provoke discussion about rethinking digital access and digital literacy amongst older people. Today, over 1000 people – from millennials to centenarians – participate in our singing sessions every week, pan Wales and now further afield too.

- The Hearth Gallery - Oriel Yr Aelwyd
Type of Event: Art Exhibition
The next Hearth Gallery exhibition will be Dementia Darnings by multi-media artist Jenni Dutton. In this body of work, Jenni responds to her mother’s dementia diagnosis by using stitching to re-create portraits of her mum from old photo albums. The exhibition has toured extensively in the UK and travelled to Europe, and China. This will be the first time it’s shown in Wales and the Hearth Gallery are proud to host it.
Meet the Artist Sessions: 5, 6, 18 May, 6 & & June, 12pm at the Hearth Gallery.
Jenni will also be joined by her daughter, Briony Goffin, who will deliver creative writing workshops - Writing as Tribute. Inspired by the Dementia Darnings exhibition, this warm and welcoming creative writing workshop will explore the power of Writing as Tribute. With support and guidance from writer and tutor, Briony Goffin, participants will be given opportunity to write a tribute to someone special in their lives in the form of a simple list poem. No previous writing experience required, and all writing materials provided.
This workshop also takes its inspiration from Briony Goffin’s TED talk, Writing as an Act of Tribute, in which Briony uses the form of the list poem to honour her grandmother, Gladys Dutton, the subject of the artwork in the Dementia Darnings exhibition. This project has created opportunity for mother and daughter’s work to overlap, and to bring three generations of women back together again.

Federico Garcia Lorca's Blood Wedding, Everyman Theatre Cardiff
- Tuesday 3rd May 2022
- Saturday 7th May 2022
- Chapter Arts Centre
Type of Event: Drama Performance
In a small rural area, a man has decided to marry a young woman from a neighbouring village. However, the bride is secretly in love with someone else.
The wedding goes on and the guests start arriving, all while the bride is struggling with inner turmoil: can she be content in her choice of groom or will she be magnetically pulled to her other love, the enemy’s son? Secrets are revealed and choices are made that create chaos and havoc on the wedding day. Will the bride and groom end up together? Will the enemy prevail? How much blood will be spilled, and is it fate or is it chance?
Federico García Lorca’s Blood Wedding is a beautiful balance of traditional romantic tropes and unconventional circumstances mixed with a little magic.
Everyman is South Wales’ leading non-professional theatre company, staging productions all year round from
its base in Chapter, as well as hosting the phenomenally successful Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival every summer.
Mewn ardal fach wledig, mae dyn yn priodi merch ifanc o bentref cyfagos - ond mae'r briodferch yn
gyfrinachol mewn cariad â rhywun arall.
Mae'r briodas yn mynd ymlaen ac mae'n gwesteion yn dechrau cyrraedd, gan fod briodferch yn cael trafferth gyda helbul mewnol: a all hi fod yn fodlon ar ei dewis o briodferch, neu a fydd hi'n cael ei denu at ei
chariad arall, mab y gelyn? Datgelir cyfrinachau a gweneir dewisiadau sy'n crey anhrefn a hafoc ar ddiwrnod y briodas. A fydd y briodferch a'r priodfab yn dod i ben gyda'i gilydd? A fydd y gelyn yn drech? Faint o waed fydd yn cael ei arllwys- ac ai siawns...neu ffawd?
Mae Blood Wedding gan Federico Garcia Lorca yn gydbwysedd hyfryd o dropes rhamantustraddodiadol ac amgylchiadau anghonfensiynol yn gymysg ag ychydig o hud.
Everyman yw cwmni theatr amhroffesiynol mwyaf blaenllaw De Cymru, gan lwyfannu cynyrchiadau gydol y flwyddyn o’i ganolfan yn Chapter, yn ogystal â chynnal G?yl Theatr Awyr Agored Caerdydd hynod lwyddiannus bob haf.

Age Cymru in collaboration with Jon Pountney and The National Library of Wales
Sponsored by Mick Antoniw MS
From a punk-rocker to a mountain-sheep-farmer and wild swimmers to allotment keepers,
Age Cymru are delighted to present a thought-provoking photography exhibition which aims to break down negative stereotypes of older people.
“I am often inspired by the communities around me — my work is rooted in people, place, and history" says Jon. “I hope that with these extraordinary stories told through imagery, we can change the narrative around older people and showcase the depth and breadth of experience we gain when growing old.”
The This is Older project took place throughout 2021 and was funded by the Arts Council of Wales.
The images are now part of the National Collection of Welsh photographs at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.
Type of Event: Art Exhibition
(Cymraeg) Drawing principally on his lifetime experiences, Alex Williams stands out as an artist whose paintings exude a vibrancy and energy. His return to Wales in the 1970s, following some time in Los Angeles, was the catalyst that sparked a period of creativity and his paintings flourished as never before.
In focusing on rural landscapes, animals and farmyards, in all their down-to-earth, grubby, muddy working detail, his paintings convey, most of all, not just what such places look like. They also have about them a sense of the smells, the tangible elemental qualities and the sheer atmosphere of a typical working farm. The rusty corrugated iron roofs and the weathered wooden clapboards of the walls of the barns and outbuildings are depicted in such a way that the viewer can imagine how they would feel if they passed a hand across them.

Type of Event: Multi Art Exhibition
As part of the Gwanwyn festival this year, The Hearth Gallery is delighted to announce our new exhibition, ‘Connections: an exploration of Creativity, Nature and Identity’, which is a showcase of artwork and creativity produced within a recent collaborative art project between University students and patients at hospital.
Between January and March this year, second year students on BA (Hons) Creative and Therapeutic Arts at the University of South Wales and patients and staff on Ward East 18, An Adult Mental Health Ward at University Hospital Llandough have collaborated together by virtually by sending ‘digital artwork postcards’ back and forth. With engaging virtual artwork received by the students, the staff provided creative art sessions with the patients to respond to the students by making their own artwork using a variety of creative materials. Photographs of the creative work were then sent back to the students and the process started again.
The exhibition in the Hearth Gallery will showcase this ongoing process and creative relationship that the students and patients have built over the last few months and will also include final artworks by the students in response to the overall project, of which some, will be donated to the Ward.
The exhibition will be available online from the 28th April – 6th June 2021.

Type of Event: Writing
Join Literature Wales at the T? Newydd Writing Centre for a bilingual day of discussion and presentations by experts in the field of arts for health and wellbeing. It will be an opportunity to listen and learn in the company of guest speakers from many different art disciplines who specialize in working with people living with dementia. There will also be plenty of opportunity to discuss and deliberate over lunch.
Speakers will include John Killick who has been writing poetry with people with dementia for 24 years, with eight books of poetry emerging from this work and six books on communication and creativity in dementia.
Beti George, a BBC Radio Cymru presenter and a tireless campaigner for better care for people living with dementia who will also share her experiences following the broadcasting of her BBC documentary in 2017 exploring her life caring for her husband, Beti and David: Lost for Words.
Poet and dramatist Patrick Jones will join us to share his experiences of unleashing stories, memories and poems for those living with dementia. He is the author of Before I Leave, a National Theatre Wales production about a choir for people living with dementia – based on real stories. The production will soon be adapted to film.
Gwion Hallam will also discuss his work in care homes, and will talk about the creative impact the work has had on his own writing as a poet.
Representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends will also be present to run a session to help us expand our understanding and knowledge of living with the condition.
More speakers, a detailed timetable and more information about the individual sessions will be announced in the next few days.
The journey to organise this conference started with the National Eisteddfod in Anglesey 2017 where Gwion Hallam won the Crown with his poem Trwy Ddrych. The work was inspired by creative workshops run by Gwion at Bryn Seiont Newydd Dementia Care Home, as part of Literature Wales’ Literature for Health and Wellbeing Project sponsored by Gwynedd Council. Gwion’s success drew attention to the important work being done by art practitioners in the health sector. Following the Eisteddfod, a local HSBC branch kindly donated sponsorship to enable us to organise this day which will hopefully encourage more projects in the future.
….
We’ll reserve an hour in the afternoon for an Open Forum, a chance for anyone to speak about the subject. You’re welcome to give a short presentation or a talk, or a 20 minute workshop using your experience of working in the dementia and arts sector. Please contact us to discuss your idea if you’re interested to reserve a slot: tynewydd@llenyddiaethcymru.org
The day is suitable for anyone interested in the arts, health and wellbeing, dementia research and more. For more information, contact us by phoning 01766 522811 or by emailing tynewydd@llenyddiaethcymru.org

Working with writer Patrick Jones, over 120 choristers have explored their special song and the story behind it. With powerful images accompanying emotive poetry, this exhibition celebrates the unique ability of song to enhance and enrich all our lives.
The exhibition also features a free lunchtime and early evening concerts with baritone Dyfed Wyn Evans.
