- Craft in the Bay, Cardiff
Type of Event: Art Exhibition
Michal Iwanowski
This exhibition encompasses the works of five visual artists who have spent two years working with residents of care homes across Wales as part of Age Cymru's cARTrefu programme.
Each artist created a nurturing environment where residents felt relaxed and encouraged to share fond memories and forgotten stories.
Emma Prentice
Through responding to this unique interaction, the artists were able to connect with the older people, some of whom live with dementia. As a direct result of this connection the artists were inspired to develop their practice and create work which expressed the sensitivity and fragility of these shared experiences, capturing and amplifying the past glories of the people they met.
Claire Cawte
The spectrum of works in the exhibition is very broad, yet there is a common thread - to showcase the experiences of the older people - creating a wider audience and challenging society's assumption of older age.

Fragile? will showcase the beauty and diversity of contemporary ceramics practice in its widest sense. It will explore the artistic and expressive possibilities of ceramic as a material, including the contradiction between two of its inherent qualities – durability and fragility. The exhibition will include key works from the National Museum’s collection, shown alongside excitingnew ceramic installations especially commissioned for this exhibition. The exhibition will contain a wide variety of objects including tableware, vases, sculptures and figurines, both functional and decorative, simple and ornate, and made of different materials e.g. earthenware and fine china.
Fragile? is generously funded by The Colwinston Charitable Trust and supported by The Derek Williams Trust.
Wednesday workshops - Free! But please book a place!
We will be running a series of free workshops for older people from May to September, with activities inspired by the Fragile? exhibition. All workshops will be on Wednesday afternoons starting at 2pm. Some workshops will be very hands-on, giving you the opportunity to be creative. Others will include fascinating demonstrations and the opportunity to engage your senses. We hope you will find something you like! All workshops will include a brief tour of part of the Fragile? exhibition, looking at particular ceramics that link to the workshop that day. You will not be given a full tour of the whole exhibition as it is quite large! If you would like to view the whole exhibition, please come in plenty of time, and view before the workshop starts at 2pm. Or come back another day and book onto one of our free guided tours! The workshops will be relaxed and friendly. No previous experience is required for any of the activities. Tea and biscuits will be provided and chatting is encouraged! Some session may be photographed, so that we have a record of our Fragile? activities, but you can always ‘opt out’ of being photographed.

Jobina Tinnemans is a Pembrokeshire-based composer. Her contemporary compositions are inspired by the majestic Welsh landscape that surrounds her. For MATA festival NYC she composed a work using prepared knitting needles as part of the performing ensemble. Knitting stitches with these needles trigger the mercurial sounds of nature and wildlife she recorded and composed in her computer.
In this workshop Jobina will talk about how this idea came about and her experiences of working with local knitting communities in Wales and New York in preparation for the concert. There are 8-10 places available for knitters of any ability to work with the prepared needles and with the timing certain stitches generate whilst knitting. This timing is important for Tinnemans' knitted music. You will hear how your knitting will trigger the sound of either wind or sea, be a single voice in a flock of squawking gannets, rustling of leaves. As a group together an entire natural soundscape will appear.
Strumble Head is a coastal natural gem situated in South West Wales, defined by its majestic cliffs. This soundscape music will feature undulating rhythms of waves dramatically crashing against cliffs smashing into foaming peaks, the sub-aquatic melodies of porpoise song carrying far into the unknown deep, the mechanical murmuring of the lighthouse bringing home safe the sailors of many a folk tale.

Jobina Tinnemans is a Pembrokeshire-based composer. Her contemporary compositions are inspired by the majestic Welsh landscape that surrounds her. In 2013 the MATA festival for young composers, co-founded by Philip Glass, commissioned her to write a new work, which premiered in Brooklyn, NYC. The work is called 'Killing Time' and Tinnemans uses prepared knitting needles as part of the performing ensemble. Knitting stitches with these needles trigger the mercurial sounds of nature and wildlife she recorded and composed in her computer. The title is a wink to the craft of knitting, because it's more to do with the timelessness of the Pwll Deri coastal landscape. Jobina got approached by Vogue Knitting NYC and will stage this Pembrokeshire piece at their Live Event gala dinner in January of next year.
"Known for her work with musique concrète, Dutch-Welsh composer Jobina Tinnemans follows the lead of the late Cornelius Cardew, incorporating nonmusicians into a new music context. Her MATA commission, "Killing Time", is a concerto grosso for solo knitters, instrumental ensemble, and a ripieno orchestra of knitters, visualizing the passage of time through its trace in fibre." (MATA NYC)
