Strange Romance - A Tribute to Steve Strange

  • Sunday 22nd November 2015
  • Wales Millennium Centre

Type of Event: Music Performance

(English) 12039288_10153631455229347_3967918427599600850_n

Featuring Boy George and Kim Wilde

With The Welsh Pops Orchestra

A celebration of one of the most iconic figures in British Pop.

From unlikely beginnings in a London nightclub to a music and fashion revolution that spread world-wide, Steve Strange was one of the guiding lights of the New Romantic movement that sprang to technicolor life in the early ’80s.

Synths were king, lavish make-up was a must and androgyny was ‘in’. Eye-liner was taken to a whole new level and changed the face of Top of the Pops - from punk-based austerity to a vivid palette of glamour and modern art.

Steve and his nightclub partner Rusty Egan joined with Midge Ure and Billy Currie  to form Visage. And the rest is history…

Now, following the untimely death of Wales’ own New Romantic icon earlier this year, some of Steve’s friends are coming together to help support a cause close to his heart, the care of the elderly.

Performing hits of their own alongside music from Visage, they’ll be accompanied by the Welsh Pops Orchestra in a night celebrating the sights and sounds of the eighties.

Join us to remember a remarkable life through the music which defined a generation.

Proceeds from fundraising activity around this concert will support the partnership between Wales Millennium Centre and Age Cymru; working together to increase access to the arts for older people.

Knitted Music

  • Saturday 16th May 2015
  • Glanfa Stage, Wales Millennium Centre

Type of Event: Music Performance

(English) Jobina Tinnemans is a Pembrokeshire-based composer. Her contemporary compositions are inspired by the majestic Welsh landscape that surrounds her. In 2013 the MATA festival for young composers, co-founded by Philip Glass, commissioned her to write a new work, which premiered in Brooklyn, NYC. The work is called 'Killing Time' and Tinnemans uses prepared knitting needles as part of the performing ensemble. Knitting stitches with these needles trigger the mercurial sounds of nature and wildlife she recorded and composed in her computer. The title is a wink to the craft of knitting, because it's more to do with the timelessness of the Pwll Deri coastal landscape. Jobina got approached by Vogue Knitting NYC and will stage this Pembrokeshire piece at their Live Event gala dinner in January of next year.

"Known for her work with musique concrète, Dutch-Welsh composer Jobina Tinnemans follows the lead of the late Cornelius Cardew, incorporating nonmusicians into a new music context. Her MATA commission, "Killing Time", is a concerto grosso for solo knitters, instrumental ensemble, and a ripieno orchestra of knitters, visualizing the passage of time through its trace in fibre." (MATA NYC)

Knitted Music - Strumble Head Soundscape

  • Saturday 16th May 2015
  • Wales Millennium Centre

Type of Event: Music Workshop

(English) Jobina Tinnemans is a Pembrokeshire-based composer. Her contemporary compositions are inspired by the majestic Welsh landscape that surrounds her. For MATA festival NYC she composed a work using prepared knitting needles as part of the performing ensemble. Knitting stitches with these needles trigger the mercurial sounds of nature and wildlife she recorded and composed in her computer.

In this workshop Jobina will talk about how this idea came about and her experiences of working with local knitting communities in Wales and New York in preparation for the concert. There are 8-10 places available for knitters of any ability to work with the prepared needles and with the timing certain stitches generate whilst knitting. This timing is important for Tinnemans' knitted music. You will hear how your knitting will trigger the sound of either wind or sea, be a single voice in a flock of squawking gannets, rustling of leaves. As a group together an entire natural soundscape will appear.

Strumble Head is a coastal natural gem situated in South West Wales, defined by its majestic cliffs. This soundscape music will feature undulating rhythms of waves dramatically crashing against cliffs smashing into foaming peaks, the sub-aquatic melodies of porpoise song carrying far into the unknown deep, the mechanical murmuring of the lighthouse bringing home safe the sailors of many a folk tale.
